A great companion book to Mrs. Brunstetter's Amish Christian fiction books. This collection of 200 recipes is gathered from friends of Mrs. Brunstetter's and are tried and true from the heart of Amish county. The Amish are known as wonderful cooks and this book doesn't disappoint. Recipes in this edition range from hardy main dishes to the sides and of course, desserts. The recipes from home cooks use everyday ingredients making it that much easier to prepare any of the scrumptious recipes. A sampling include, Laura's Casserole, Shoofly Cake, Rivel Soup from favorite Amish selections. There are many "English" (non-Amish) recipes too adapted by Amish cooks such as Baked Pork Chops, Key Lime Pie and Sweet and Sour Green Beans. An added plus are many non-edible ideas like Homemade Play Dough and Stainless Steel Cleaner. This cookbook is definitely one worth adding to any kitchen collection!

A Great Christmas Gift! I can honestly say this cookbook is going to be one of my favorites. So many easy and simple recipes. I didn’t want to write a review until I had at least tried one of the recipes. For supper tonight, I made “Italian Chicken.” This was so delicious and so easy to make. It will be a regular in our house for sure. I also bought the ingredients to make, “Crunchy Peanut Butter Balls”, “Peanut Clusters” and “Peanut Butter Fudge” to share with our adult Sunday school class. I kno A Great Christmas Gift! But wait, this isn’t just a cookbook. The author shares with us scripture, a brief history of the Amish and Mennonites, An Amish Christmas, Christmas Program and Traditions, Christmas Meals, and much more. This is a must have cookbook for your shelf. I am thrilled with it and I know you will be too. Just think, you can get an early start on your Christmas shopping. Who wouldn’t be delighted to receive this beautiful cookbook as a gift? I wish to thank the publisher and author for allowing me to enjoy this cookbook and to give my review of it. The opinions expressed are mine alone.

I really loved looking into this cookbook...and I loved cooking one or two of the recipes!!! They came out delicious...and as I was eating them...I was daydreaming about how it would be...to be sitting in an Amish kitchen eating it!!!

I really love this book. Yes it's a cookbook. I love to read it anyway. It has some general information on Amish People which is not what I really read over and over. I have read those chapter prefaces once. What I love are the simple hearty recipes that this book holds. It says 200 so I trust them to print the truth. There is more to just the simplicity of these recipes. I like that there are some recipes for down home substitutes like window cleaner and soda crackers. Do I make them? No. But I grew up with a Mother who did. I always kid myself that I will someday do the same. Shame on me. Maybe when the apocalypse razes the earth I won't be able to shop at Walmart and will have to take whatever is left and preserve it.

The second star is mostly for the interesting tidbits it gives about Amish life in general, home remedies, etc. All I could think about as I looked at the recipes was "Do Amish people really use so much store-bought, processed food?" A preponderance of dishes containing things like Jello, canned this, frozen that. I thought it would be more about "from scratch" home-style cooking, but it was more like a midwestern Baptist church's funeral food. Meh. Not bad, and I like that the recipes are simple, but I didn't find all that much I would want to actually make in here. Unless it's that zuchini carrot cake (who knew that was a thing?)

These are not exactly health conscious recipes, although I did find some good cures for sick stomach, and kidney stones.
